Bookends | 10.08.18

bookends, karina reads, book blogHappy Friday guys and gals. After an unexpected three day weekend thanks to a humongous stone chipping then cracking my car windscreen… I have had a top reading week. In 4 days I read 6 books, which leads me handily onto what I’m….

Currently reading:

I am half way through Chloe Neill’s Chicagoland Vampires series and I am loving it. I enjoy devouring urban/paranormal fantasy series every now and again when I need quick escapism as they’re generally fast paced with a strong crime/mystery element but I tend to run out of steam after three books and never get round to finishing them (ahem, Kate Daniels). Notable exceptions being Kelley Armstrong’s Cainsville series and Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series which are both 5 books long – except Fever, technically, but we don’t talk about the books after number 5 – and both are my absolute favourites of the genre (along with Ilona Andrews’ Hidden Legacy series, currently a trilogy). So it’s surprising that I’m still going with Chicagoland Vamps. It’s just so addictive. We have vampires, shifters, fairies, sorcerers and even nymphs – but our protagonist is a kickass sentinel vampire. Okay, so everyone is ridiculously and unrealistically good looking, but there is no overly angsty romantic drama that can sometimes overtake the plot in this genre and our main girl Merit has strong friendships with other women and men which is refreshing. I’m not sure I’ll keep my momentum all the way up to book 13 (plus novellas), but I’m really enjoying my binge at the moment.

Currently watching:

Continuing my fantastical tv discoveries, I have started watching Grimm. I’d heard about it before but I was put off by the idea of people being part animal ( an episode of Goosebumps where the kids got stuck in pig bodies has a lot to answer for) but I’ve stuck with it for a few episodes and it’s really good! The main man is a detective descended from the infamous Grimm bothers (i think? He’s called a Grimm anyway) thus he can see the evil supernaturals masquerading as humans, and the good ones I presume – if there are any, in our modern world. It comes as a bit of a shock so he’s still trying to work out what he can/is supposed to do to beat them. I’m only a few episodes in, and I get that due to the premise there has to be surprise supernaturals/mythological creatures popping up here, there and everywhere, but I’m finding it a little unrealistic that every case he gets called into involves a creature of some kind. It is fantasy, I know, but still.

Currently loving:

Continuing the binge reading theme: my kindle. It allows me to binge series with minimal trouble and only a few overnight charges. I have a kindle paperwhite so I can read with the lights off which is one of my favourite things ever. I dislike brightness, a true bookworm, so being able to lie in bed and keep reading is perfecto. I also find I read a lot quicker on my kindle which also helps the binge-reading. I will always adore print books and I buy them regularly enough, but my kindle is my best friend when it comes to big books and paranormal/urban fantasy.

Adios, and happy reading 🙂

  1. “we don’t talk about the books after number 5” – HAHAHAHA. Shadowfever was such a great ending! There were some things I enjoyed about the later books and I think I rated them all 3 stars, but the ninth was a disappointment! I don’t actually remember how it all ended, haha.

I’ll definitely check out Chloe Neill’s books at some point! They seem like they will be great reads for when I don’t want to focus on anything heavy or dense. Funny how you say that your Kindle is great for binge-reading… I just borrowed Murder of Crows and five of the Kate Daniels novellas, hahaha. Happy reading to me! 😛

    1. Yeah i’m not putting myself through those – i don’t want them to mar my love of the first 5 😄

Yes that is definitely a good shout – i love these types of books when life is a bit hectic and I just need to escape 😊 i will most likely lose interest when the romance wraps up though 🙈 i think that was my problem with Kate Daniels, once her and Curran accepted their looove i lost interest a little. Yay!! Sounds like the best weekend 🙌🏻 interested to see what you think of Murder of Crows – i binge-read the first 4 or so of that series recently too 😊 written in red was excellent. I think preferred Bishop’s Black Jewels trilogy though

      1. Yes, I don’t think you’re missing anything, hahaha.

Exactly! And I’m expecting I’ll be busy over the next few months, so escapist reads will be perfect. I still love Kate and Curran but I was getting a teeny bit tired of their relationship in some ways. However, I just read the preview of the beginning of Magic Triumphs on Andrews’ website and I’m all excited again!!

I’m definitely excited to continue the Others series. I hope I can listen to more of them too, but ebooks will suffice if not, hehe.

        1. I think I will probably pick them up again as I did enjoy the world and the other characters (and the big bad villain). I won’t have an excuse when the last one comes out 😊

I’m so jealous of how good your library is for ebooks and audio! Mine has a very small ebook collection and the audio appears to be on tapes and cds…. 🙈

  2. I was hooked on Grimm for a while too. I enjoyed it and need to complete it. I was looking for something similar to Supernatural and that fit though it’s not as funny as Supernatural sometimes is.

    1. I’m sooo keen to watch Supernatural! I can’t find it online in the uk at the moment so i don’t know much about it, but i hope i can find it soon! 😊

      1. Oh no, that’s sad. I think you’d love it. If you like Grimm, you’ll def like Supernatural. It draws on several myths and folklores and such but what I love the most is that it pokes fun at itself sometimes.

        1. Ahh that sounds amazing!! I can find from season 9 but not the first ones. I think i’ll have to bite the bullet and buy them 😄

            1. I do, but our Netflix is rubbish compared to what’s on the US one! We either get it really late or not at all 😦 which is annoying me as i adore 90s/early noughties american tv 😂

  3. Sounds like a pretty awesome week! (Hope the car’s OK). 🙂
If you get chance to watch Supernatural it is so, so good up to and including Season 5. Then, after that … not so much. (IMHO). 🙂

      1. Angels and demons do come into it, along with urban legends, myths etc., and Hell is a very real place in the world of Supernatural. 🙂 It’s also able to take the micky out of itself, and goes a bit X-Files some episodes too.
