The Book of Life, All Souls trilogy, Deborah Harkness, Karina ReadsOkay guys, how is it August already?! On the one hand, I feel like we’re having the worlds longest summer but on the other, where has the year gone? Ah well, thank goodness it’s Friday.

Currently reading:

In anticipation for the TV adaption, I am reading the third and final book in Deborah Harkness’ All Souls trilogy, The Book of Life. I’m about a third of the way through and it’s quite good… it start was much stronger than book 2 , which is promising, but so far there’s a lot of searching for missing manuscript pages in books and studying genetics in labs. I’m ready for a bit of action / (witchy/vamp) political tension to be honest. Hopefully it will all kick off soon and I’ll be hooked. It doesn’t help that I have some exciting books lined up in my tbr for this month that I’m keen to get to. Oops.

Currently watching:
So I’ve fallen down a bit of a rabbit hole for this one. I was casually browsing the SFF section on telly and did a double take when I saw a programme called Bitten. As in, Kelley Armstrong’s Bitten, book 1 of her Otherworld series. I did not know it existed so I *had* to watch it. The acting is terrible. Truly terrible. And the ‘CGI’ for the werewolves is so appalling it’s hard to believe it was created this century, let alone this decade. But man, I can’t stop watching. The first series vaguely follows the storyline of the first book but so far series 2 has veered off canon. It’s fascinating – the Elena/Clayton dynamic is so intense, way more so than in the book. In the novels, Clay actually has some sort of personality and feels like a real person, but tv show Clay is more monosyllabic and slopes about with intense facial expressions. So odd. I would never have read the books if I’d seen this show first, but I can’t stop watching. Luckily, they only made three seasons so I’ll be done soon…

Currently listening to:
Nothing new to see here, still listening to the School for Dumb Women podcast. I’ve nearly listened to the whole back catalogue now, only 10 or more so to go. There’ll be something new here next week. As you were.

Currently loving:
RAIN. Not sure if you could tell amidst everybody and their aunt posting photos/videos of the rain on social media (me totally included, I was so happy), but it actually rained last weekend. Full on, proper rainstorm downpours. It was so glorious, I’m still riding the high several days later. It broke the unbearable heat and gave the plants a well deserved drink. I got to wear comfy pj trousers and a jumper, candles were lit, windows were open with a cool breeze airing the flat and I curled up with my book. Blissful. Sun’s back now, but the nights don’t feel *quite* so stuffy. Phew.

Hope you’re all having a great week, see you on the other side!

  1. The All Souls trilogy is on my TBR! The TV show sounds good too, but I don’t have Sky so I probably won’t watch it. 🙈

I’m so very curious about the Bitten TV show now, ahahaha. I’ll read a few more of the books before I try it. 😂

The weather will apparently be very sunny this weekend! Which is kind of nice because I’m planning to go to the park to read again, but hopefully it won’t be *too* hot…

    Have a fab weekend! ❤️

    1. I hope you enjoy it! I’ve only got a hundred pages left / if anyone dies i’ll be furious!! 😂 ah, NowTV is a lifesaver for that, get the 30 day free trial and you can watch when it comes out. Probably better to read the books first though… 😊

Ooh i can’t wait to hear what you think. Honestly, you were so right last week, it’s so bad it’s good!! It kind of is making me want to pick up book 3 as i want to convince myself that anything she writes cannot be as bad as this. Or maybe i’ll just reread Cainsville even though i only read them the other month 😆

It feels very hot today! Be careful being out in the heat and enjoy your weekend 😊❤️

      1. Hahaha. It’s quite a chunky series, so I’ll probably wait a little while till I get to it. And that is a smart idea about NowTV. 😏

I know you said you stopped reading because it wasn’t about the wolves anymore, but I really like the idea of covering different POVs! I’m very interested to see what it’s like. When in doubt, reread. 😉

        You too! 💕

        1. Don’t blame you there 😄

Yeah I think I’m in a better place to continue the series now. I first read Bitten and Stolen when I was an overly dramatic 14/15 year old – i probably couldn’t cope being away from the be all and end all Clay/Diana duo 😂 now i’ve read a lot more fantasy and urban fantasy (a large proportion of which feature werewolves/shifters) I think I’m ready for some badass female witchery 😄

            1. Me neither, they’re mainly YA and i don’t read that anymore really. I’d also like some more adult fantasy with angels but that’s hard to find too. Funny how some ‘sub-genres’ are harder to find in adult fantasy 😬
