My 2016 Reading Round Up

2016 has been a great reading year for me. I’ve always been a reader but this has been the first year since leaving full time education that I’ve found my groove. I now know that fantasy fiction is my genre but that I also enjoy historical fiction, crime and YA. I’ve found it much easier to find new books to read since actively using Goodreads  and following more blogs/bookstagrams that enjoy reading similar works. I managed to read a total of 141 books this year which smashed my target of 52  and discovered several new series that I know I’ll reread and love for a very long time. Highlights include Robin Hobb’s Liveship Traders and Tawny Man trilogies; Anne Bishop’s Black Jewels series; Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy and Catherynne M Valente’s Deathless. Every single one of those books blew me away with excellently emotive writing and amazing characters and plots. Looking back I’m proud that my 2016 favourites have all been written by women and feature strong, independent and interesting female characters. I know how rare that can be in a genre dominated by men so I’m pleased to have found them. Luckily, I have a few more of Hobb’s works to devour and Laini Taylor’s Strange the Dreamer comes out in March – can’t wait! I must give an honourable mention to Brandon Sanderson who continues to be one of my favourite authors after reading Warbreaker and Elantris this year. I’ve got his Stormlight Archive series ready and waiting on my bookshelves so I’m excited to delve into another world in his Cosmere universe, after which I can pick up his Arcanum Unbounded and discover some new facts about the Cosmere.

What have been your favourite reads of 2016? Have you got any recommendations based on what I’ve read? I’d love to hear them!

Happy New Year, I hope you have a great night and 2017 x

      1. Yeah. I know what you’re talking about. I love crime books and i read it very fast. But if i read anything else especially romance, will take like one week to finish the book because i can’t concentrate enough or i just feel like i don’t want to read. Haha

        1. Weird isn’t it? You’d think if you were a fast reader you’d always read fast, but obviously that isn’t the case! At least we know what we like 😄

        1. Ooh very exciting! I deffo recommend Deathless by Cat Valente if you haven’t already tried it. It’s literary/mythical/russian folklore. And historical at the end. Very good. I’ve since read bits and pieces from a Russian folklore anthology and found it so interesting to see the basis of a lot of current/newer stories 😊
